About Detroit continued

Detroit Flanagan defines persistence, perseverance, and service wherever he may be: in
the booth, on camera, on the court, and in the classroom. After winning back to back LA
City Basketball Championships in high school, he was awarded a full scholarship to
Loyola Marymount University, where he earned a degree in mathematics and later
became their first African American Alumni President.
After marrying his high school sweetheart and serving four years as an Aerospace
Munitions Officer with the United States Air Force, he spent over 20 years as a member
of SAG (now SAG/AFTRA), appearing in commercials for Doritos, AT&T, Travelers
insurance, The Marines, Kia, and more.
Detroit combined his performance experience with his love for community service
through work with Project Gangs and their production of โ€œGangs,โ€ a gritty play with a
cast made up of actual gang members. Detroit toured highs schools in LA County for five
years, playing the role of โ€œGood Cop.โ€
A life-long educator, he worked with LA Laker great Walt Hazzard and the LA Sports
Academy, a nonprofit focused on bringing academic excellence to middle schoolers
through basketball. For fourteen years, he taught with LAUSD helping high school
dropout students earn GEDs and diplomas, and worked with California parolees to help
them with educational and substance abuse issues.
A storyteller at heart, Detroit brings this same passion to online content creation, drawing from his
8 decade life experiences to bring truthful, heartfelt communications to his caring insights and shared wisdom
and trustworthiness.
